Radioecology Training Center

Period: 2001 – 2003

Customer: IAEA

Project objective: establish a center for professional radioecologycal training under the International Radioecological Laboratory.

The following tasks were completed within the framework of the project:

  • Supply of equipment for strontium and transuranium elements spectrometry, equipment for global positioning system signals receipt and processing in real time, hardware and software for geoinformation systems (GIS) operation.
  • Development of operating instructions, commissioning of the equipment.
  • Training of the laboratory experts in spectrometry, radiobiology, geoinformation systems and global positioning system application for a radioecology research. The training was delivered at the IAEA training facilities in Austria and the U.S. Texas Technological University, correspondingly.
  • Delivery of pilot training courses to radioecology experts at the center’s facilities.

While using experimental potential of the Laboratory, the trained experts study current ecological condition of the territory contaminated as a result of the Chornobyl accident. The objective is to forecast the radioecology situation scenario, develop protective activities to prevent spread of radionuclides in the environment and minimize possible consequences of potential accidents at nuclear fuel facilities.
