Chornobyl Center meets Japanese journalists

The Chornobyl catastrophe that took place 20 years ago had a significant impact on the fundamentals of the mankind in spiritual, social, economic and medical aspects.

Therefore, on the threshold of 20th anniversary of the world nuclear tragedy we face an increase of interest among the broadest range of the international public, scientists, and journalists in the ChNPP accident and experience in overcoming its consequences, state of public health and recovery of the Chornobyl area.

One of the delegations, which recently visited Ukraine with this purpose, was the delegation of journalists of leading Japanese mass media: NIKKEI, Sankei Shimbun, Fukui Shimbun, Denki Shimbun, Chunichi Shimbun, Tokyo Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun, as well as Japan Atomic Energy Relations Organization. Chornobyl Center organized this visit on request of the Japan Embassy in Ukraine.

The interest of Japanese scientists and journalists to the Chornobyl issues was always high. This is not accidentally. Japan as well as Ukraine also faced a complicated set of scientific and technical problems connected with consequences of the nuclear explosions. In addition, Japan is a member of the International Chornobyl Center (ICC), within which Ukrainian and Japanese specialists implemented a number of scientific and research initiatives on the Shelter Object site and within the Exclusion Zone.
On February 24, 2006 the delegation of Japanese journalists met with the managers and experts of the Chornobyl Center (CC). The journalists were particularly interested in emergency response training, databases on the Chornobyl accident and Shelter Object, NPP power units decommissioning.

Japanese journalists showed a great interest in the activities concerning the ISDB (Integrated Shelter Database) and the way of its implementation under the International Shelter Implementation Plan (SIP).

The delegation visited the International Radioecology Laboratory and acquainted with the results of our specialists’ research in the area of the Chornobyl zone radioactive contamination impact on biological objects.

Earlier, on February 23, Japanese journalists visited the Chornobyl Zone and ChNPP facilities. They visited the town of Chornobyl, town of Pripyat, observation site of the Shelter Object, vehicles disposal site in Rossokha.
